CA-1 Family Day

Published on Monday, December 30, 2024

On Saturday, September 28, we held our first Anesthesia Family Day for the families and friends of our CA-1 residents.  We highlighted our program to approximately 30 attendees. The goal of the Family Day was to share with the families and friends the “life” of an anesthesia resident and the resources available at UMMC to deal with some of the unique challenges posed by residency training in anesthesiology. This half day event included various sessions, including topics such as wellness, burnout and substance abuse. We also had simulations for families and friends to demonstrate various anesthesia-related skills such as regional anesthesia, POCUS, line placements as well as an anesthesia case using high-fidelity simulation.

The feedback from both residents and their families/friends has been overwhelmingly positive. Undoubtedly, the event provided valuable insights into our program to those who attended. This success wouldn't have been possible without the effort and collaboration from several members of our team. Drs. Prem Anand, Patrick Newman, Sara Robertson, LaToya Mason, Luke Burnham, Walker Robison, Josh Irby, and Kathryn Wolff helped with the sessions. Andrea Applin helped with all the logistical arrangements. We hope to continue this yearly tradition to show our residents’ families what anesthesiology is all about!
